Heart Collages

This year is flying by and we’re already planning our Valentine’s Day art project for The Wilds pop-up classes. This is a fun one where every valentine is going to come out special and unique to the little artist that makes it. After painting we will let the little artists glue on any extras they want. Glue is always a big hit for this age range. I’ll be prepping collage supplies to include felt, pom poms, corrugated cardboard. And the added fun part of this activity is the beading of the pipe cleaner too. Enjoy!

Supplies

Cardboard Sheets
Corrugated Cardboard
Pipe Cleaners
Wood Beads
Felt
Sequins
Pom Poms
Straws (cut for beads)
Tempera Paint(we love Blick colors best)
Glue
Scissors
Pencil

Directions

  • First: Draw and cut out a heart shape from the your cardboard sheets. The cardboard sheets are a little easier to cut than boxes you get in the mail. But those work great too!

  • Paint your valentines! We used Blick Fluorescent Hot Pink, Fluorescent Violet, Light Purple, Magenta, Pink, and Red. I always mix with white to get the shade I want.

  • Next: I had some scrap corrugated cardboard and cut into smaller shapes. You can either paint them first or paint them once they are glued onto the mittens. The kids tend do do both in class. But this will also be a good time to add on any other extras like felt and pom poms.

  • Last: I like to pre-assemble one side of the pipe cleaner to the heart. That way the little artist only has to add on the beads. Once they’re done beading, I come around and attach the extra side.

  • Happy Valentine’s Day!
