butterfly wands
Something about the start of Spring feels whimsical. It might be the blooms and flowers, or it might be the mix of chilly mornings and warmer afternoons. But wands are always magical to make. So for the season, a butterfly wand craft for all of those pretend play days.

Directions
First: Sketch out a butterfly outline onto a piece of cardboard. You can use any recycled cardboard material. We like the sheets linked above as they’re more condensed and thin, but still heavy duty, so perfect for these wands. We were able to get 2 butterflies on each 8x10” sheet (if you stacked them vertically, with the 10” side being the tall side). If you need some guidance, you can do a quick “butterfly template” google or Pinterest search. But try not to overthink it!
Next: Once you have your butterfly cut out, you can decorate it with the paint sticks! I used every color but white. The butterfly from “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” as my inspiration. (We also ready this story at The Wilds pop-up class!).
Then: To add some contrast, I used a Q-tip to add white dots to the butterfly design. And then glued on a few pom poms for fun.
For the wand and streamers: I picked out 4 colors of felt and two sheets at a time, cut thin strips straight across. I used the 12x18” felt sheets linked above, and cut along the 12” side. The great thing about this felt, is that it is super soft and has a flow to it. Some felt is stiffer. And if you give the felt a little tug, you’ll notice the felt strips you cut can get longer and thiner. I just tied them to the top of the wand.
Last: On the flat side of the knotted felt, I added a little hot glue and attached the butterfly. Now you’re ready to go after it dries!
