SPRING UMBRELLAS

Spring showers bring May flowers! We’re so thankful for the warmer weather, and this fun collage project is a great way to welcome spring into the classroom. The kids will enjoy the chance to paint and decorate umbrellas at the The Wilds pop-up classes. It will hopefully be our last class indoors as we love making art with our littles outside! Now, time to gather all of our materials!

Directions

  • First: We used the watercolor paper linked above. I find that it works well with tempera paint and paint sticks, in addition to watercolor paint. It still warps when painted, but always settles down once it is dried. For the image above I folded one piece of paper in half and lightly sketched out an umbrella top. So from one sheet, you should get two umbrellas! And on a cardboard sheet, I drew out an umbrella handle and cut it out too.
**The cardboard sheets are a little easier to cut than boxes you get in the mail. But those work great too!

  • Next: Color the watercolor paper umbrella with the tempera paint sticks! If you decide to use liquid paint, I’d paint and let it dry, then attach it to the handle. If you’re using paint sticks, you can glue them together.

  • Then: I folded another sheet of watercolor paper in half, and cut it with scissors. On one sheet I had my daughter use blue paint sticks. On the other half I had her use pinks, purples and red. I let them “dry” for a minute (the paint sticks make the paper a little sticky). Then we cut out raindrops and flowers.
**If your child is younger, you could prep all of this and skip the decorate step. But I always find even the littlest kids find joy in the steps above.

  • Ready to decorate! We glued the paper flowers to the umbrellas. And glued some jewels to the handles, because why not! Then we used a hole punch on the raindrops and umbrella, so we could add little pipecleaner pieces to had the rain drops. I just folded them over slightly.

  • Have fun!
